Liberty Rail Trail

The Trail Head on Chestnut Street

The Liberty Rail Trail is a 3 mile rustic rail trail located within the Village of Liberty. Perfect for walking or Mountain Biking, the trail offers recreational activities just off Main Street.

Surface: Cinder, Dirt, Grass, & Pavement
Distance: 2.62 Miles
Max Altitude: 1,596 ft
Min Altitude: 1,466 ft
Trail Head: Intersection of Chestnut St & West Street, Liberty, NY

The Liberty Rail Trail was formerly part of the O&W Rail Line that ran out of Middletown, NY. The rail bed has been neglected for over 40 years, in 2007 LibertyBikeTrail.org volunteers worked to revive the rail bed into a rail trail. Today the 2.6 mile stretch is clear of garbage, it features a very gradual slope over it’s entire length and has benches for hikers and bikers to rest and enjoy their natural surroundings.

It’s easy to get to the trail head so you can enjoy the trail! The Trail Head is located at the intersection of Chestnut Street (State Route 52) and West Street in the Village of Liberty.

Sections of the Liberty Rail Trail were included as Sullivan Renaisance projects. The category A project won the Environmental Impact Award.

The Trail is maintained by volunteers and residents that live along the trail. For more information on the Trail please contact us!
